Frequently Asked Questions about GPS Dog Tracking

We've compiled a list of frequently asked questions about our PetSafe® GPS Locator and dog tracking. If you have a question that is not answered here or in the PetSafe® GPS Locator™ Operating Guide, please feel free to contact us.

How accurate is dog GPS?

Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking was originally developed by the U.S. Department of Defense. The satellite-based system is extremely accurate, typically pinpointing a location within a few meters.

Why do you use Assisted GPS and how does it help?

Assisted GPS helps the unit to receive the signals from the satellites in places such as inside buildings and in wooded areas where standard GPS does not work. You can rest assured that if your pet is lost in the woods or is hiding in a garage that you can find them.

Can the PetSafe GPS Locator be worn by small dogs or cats?

The PetSafeGPS Locator can be used on dogs that weigh 30 pounds or more.

How much does the PetSafe GPS Locator weigh?

The PetSafe GPS Locator dog collar weighs less than 7.4 ounces including batteries. It is durable and water-resistant.

What is the maximum radius for the PetSafe GPS Locator Home Zone™?

Your PetSafe GPS Locator works in a Home Zone that extends from a center point that you establish. By default, the Home Zone radius is set at 300 feet. It can be adjusted to as far as 50 miles away. Due to the accuracy of GPS, it is recommended that the Home Zone not be set less than a 300 foot radius or a false violation may occur.

Does the PetSafe GPS Locator work outside the USA?

The PetSafe GPS Locator currently only operates inside the USA.

Will my dog feel anything when crossing his Home Zone boundary while wearing the GPS collar?

Nothing at all.

Can the PetSafe GPS Locator be worn on my dog's regular collar?

The GPS locator can be worn on most dog collars if it can be threaded onto them.

How long do the GPS collar batteries typically last?

The PetSafe GPS Locator dog collar operates on rechargeable batteries. Typical battery life is approximately 4-5 days. A rechargeable battery kit is included in your PetSafe GPS Locator purchase.

After I receive a low battery alert on my GPS collar, how much time do I have to replace the batteries before they die?

You have approximately 24 hours from a low battery alert to change out the batteries. However, we recommend that you change out the batteries at your earliest opportunity to ensure adequate battery life in the event your dog is ever lost.

Why do I get a low battery alert on my GPS dog tracker in advance of the need for replacement?

This is a safety feature. If your dog escaped, and the battery had very little life remaining, then the unit could run out of power during the tracking process.

Once I register my GPS dog tracker, how long does it take to become activated?

The recognition of your GPS Locator dog collar may take up to 4 hours after registration.

Does the PetSafe GPS Locator work anywhere?

The PetSafe GPS Locator dog collar works anywhere within the 50 United States.

Is the PetSafe GPS Locator website compatible with my PDA or mobile device?

The PetSafe GPS Locator website currently is not compatible with browsers typically found in PDA or mobile devices. We are working towards a solution that will provide mobile/PDA users the ability to access the tracking site. Thank you for your patience.

How long will the GPS dog collar be off of my dog while recharging the batteries?

You do not have to remove the collar to recharge the batteries. Your system includes an extra set of 2 rechargeable batteries and a charger. When you get a Low Battery Alert simply swap out the batteries in the unit, and recharge the batteries you removed. There is no need for the collar to be off the dog for 4-6 hours while the batteries recharge, which would leave your dog unprotected during an escape without the collar.

How long have you been in business?

We have been in business making products for your pet since 1991. For more details, please see this document (PDF). Also, please visit the PetSafe website to see all the pet products made by PetSafe.

What is the advantage of using your product which utilizes Assisted GPS (AGPS) and cell phone technology for tracking versus using a product which utilizes GPS and RF (Radio Frequencies) to track?

AGPS dog tracking helps you locate your dog even if it is in a heavily wooded area or inside a garage; unlike typical GPS which does not work well in heavy cover or inside a structure, such as a house or garage. The cell phone technology allows you to track your pet anywhere there is cell coverage. With RF, if there are obstructions (like trees or houses) the range between you and your pet can be reduced dramatically. The cell phone technology also allows our Customer Care Center to assist you in locating your pet.

If I am tracking my dog and I get a Low Battery Alert, how much time do I still have to find my dog?

You should have at least 5 – 10 hours, depending on how often you send new Locate commands to the collar. If you were to send a new Locate command once every minute, you would have about 5 hours remaining.

When I change the batteries does the unit remember my Home Zone?

Yes.

Where is your Tracking Customer Call Center located?
